- Explorer Train Rides
Sponsored by the LHVA, we visited Carbondale for Pioneer days in August
2007 and Archbald for a Church Festival in 2008. Ride the rails in
vintage Delaware, Lackawanna & Western coaches on vintage tracks
paralleling the Lackawanna River behind a Steamtown National Historic
Site engine.

- Special Events and Tours
Costumed re-enactors presented 1877 – Riot on Lackawanna Avenue and At
the Iron Furnaces: A Living History Production in 2007. In 2008, we
attended the dedications of a new state historic marker for Rocky Glen
and the 1877 riot as well as visiting Millionaires Row in Williamsport.
In addition, there are the Annual Civil War Ball and the Victorian Tea.

- Downtown Scranton Walking Tours
Included in this walking tour starting at the Lackawanna College is the
newly renovated Court House Square. Even before it was renovated, this
square was well worth a visit. The Civil War Memorial and the John
Mitchell Memorial are only two of the many items of interest.

- Places of Worship Tours
Offered in rotation with the Historic Hill House tours, we visited
Scranton's Hill Section's churches in 2007. Each visited church's
history was presented as well as architectural styles and designs. The
Olyphant Church Tour, last done in 2008, can be arranged with the
Society office for groups for special occasions.

- Historic Hill House Tour
Every other year willing homeowners open their homes to visitation to
see the inside of the historic mansions and other homes that dot the
Hill Section of Scranton. We usually include one house under
restoration. For more information on the 2009 house tour, see our Calendar of Events page under the June events.

- Cemetery Tour
Hear the stories of Scranton's leaders of yore at the location of their
eternal rest. Currently, the Dunmore Cemetery Tours are offered
annually on the first two Sundays of October, and additional cemetery
tours are scheduled in cooperation with local partners.

- Holiday Open House
See the Catlin House adorned with period decorations and view a display
of classic Christmas cards.

- Award Presentations
The LHS presents awards for achievement in the advancement of local
history. Pictured is the 2009 presentation of the Alan Sweeney Award at
the 2009 Railfest at Steamtown NHS to Community Leader and Dedicated
Volunteer Dominic Keating (second on the right) "in recognition of
unwavering dedication to the interpretation of local history to
encourage embracing our heritage throughout the Lackawanna Valley."
