  • Explorer Train Rides
Sponsored by the LHVA, we visited Carbondale for Pioneer days in August 2007 and Archbald for a Church Festival in 2008. Ride the rails in vintage Delaware, Lackawanna & Western coaches on vintage tracks paralleling the Lackawanna River behind a Steamtown National Historic Site engine.
  • Special Events and Tours
Costumed re-enactors presented 1877 – Riot on Lackawanna Avenue and At the Iron Furnaces: A Living History Production in 2007. In 2008, we attended the dedications of a new state historic marker for Rocky Glen and the 1877 riot as well as visiting Millionaires Row in Williamsport. In addition, there are the Annual Civil War Ball and the Victorian Tea.
  • Downtown Scranton Walking Tours
Included in this walking tour starting at the Lackawanna College is the newly renovated Court House Square. Even before it was renovated, this square was well worth a visit. The Civil War Memorial and the John Mitchell Memorial are only two of the many items of interest.
  • Places of Worship Tours
Offered in rotation with the Historic Hill House tours, we visited Scranton's Hill Section's churches in 2007. Each visited church's history was presented as well as architectural styles and designs. The Olyphant Church Tour, last done in 2008, can be arranged with the Society office for groups for special occasions.
  • Historic Hill House Tour
Every other year willing homeowners open their homes to visitation to see the inside of the historic mansions and other homes that dot the Hill Section of Scranton. We usually include one house under restoration. For more information on the 2009 house tour, see our Calendar of Events page under the June events.
  • Cemetery Tour
Hear the stories of Scranton's leaders of yore at the location of their eternal rest. Currently, the Dunmore Cemetery Tours are offered annually on the first two Sundays of October, and additional cemetery tours are scheduled in cooperation with local partners.
  • Holiday Open House
See the Catlin House adorned with period decorations and view a display of classic Christmas cards.
  • Award Presentations
The LHS presents awards for achievement in the advancement of local history. Pictured is the 2009 presentation of the Alan Sweeney Award at the 2009 Railfest at Steamtown NHS to Community Leader and Dedicated Volunteer Dominic Keating (second on the right) "in recognition of unwavering dedication to the interpretation of local history to encourage embracing our heritage throughout the Lackawanna Valley."
