Anthracite or “hard” coal played a major role in the Industrial Revolution, and northeastern Pennsylvania was among the greatest coal producers in the nation. For more than 100 years, immigrants flocked to Lackawanna County because of its great need for mine workers, and Scranton became known as the Anthracite Capital of the World.
